Two arrested over spreading misleading video
A team of Bogura cyber police early yesterday arrested two, including a student, for allegedly spreading an old video on social media and stating that it is recent footage.
The arrestees are Md Mahbur Rahman (23) and Md Shariful Islam (24), both hailing from Shibganj upazila.
Shariful is a fourth-year student of English department at Govt Azizul Haque College, and Mahbur is Shariful's associate, police said.
A case has been filed against them under Digital Security Act with Bogura Sadar Police Station, said Inspector Md Emran Mahmud Tuhin of Bogura Detective Branch.
Police detained them from Nishindara area of Bogura Sadar upazila around 1am.
The video, which went viral, showed a team of Bogura district law-enforcers illegally smashing battery-run auto-rickshaws and vans with hammers, and later, bulldozing them. Police said the incident took place in 2017, but during the current lockdown, the arrestees publicised it as a recent incident.
According to a police press release, the accused were spreading the video inside a Facebook group.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused admitted that they had used the opportunity to tarnish the image of law enforcement agencies during the ongoing strict lockdown, police said.
Bogura Superintendent of Police Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan told The Daily Star, "The accused are inciting public discontent and anger against the government by releasing an old video and saying the footage is of current drives of law enforcers during the ongoing lockdown."
The accused will be produced before court today, said Inspector Emran Mahmud Tuhin.
