‘Stay alert to prevent attack on minorities’
An Islamic cleric yesterday urged people to maintain harmony in the country and remain alert to prevent any kind of attacks on minority communities, amid the recent spate of violence in India.
"Our Muslim brothers, we believe in harmony, not in sectarianism…We will not hurt any non-Muslims living in the country. We live peacefully here and we will maintain harmony," Nur Hossain Kasemi, president of Dhaka city unit of Hefazat-e-Islam, said yesterday during a protest programme in the city.
Different Islamic groups, under the banner of "like-minded Islamic parties" held the rally in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Juma prayers, protesting "attacks on Muslims living in Delhi."
The Islamist leader said Bangladesh is a country of peace and harmony, where people from different religions including Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism live peacefully.
"We will maintain harmony," he said.
Speaking at the protest programme, several Islamist leaders said they would not allow Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join upcoming Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's birth centenary celebrations.
Apart from Baitul Mukarram mosque, devotees also staged demonstrations in the city and elsewhere, demanding immediate an stop to attacks on Muslims in Delhi.
The recent clashes in Delhi, which broke out on Sunday, have so far left 42 people dead and over 200 others injured.
