Rag Day celebration: Dhaka University says yesterday’s notice ‘misinterpreted’

In the wake of wide criticism, Dhaka University authorities today backtracked from their earlier notice of banning rag day celebration on campus.
The authorities issued another press release claiming that the information regarding banning rag day was misrepresented inadvertently in the press release that was issued yesterday.
"Concerned authorities were asked to remain alert so that no untoward, inhuman, disrespectful and anti-disciplinary acts take place on the campus and dormitories in the name of celebrating Rag Day. Policies are needed to be formulated to hold any programme or rally to celebrate the education completion or graduation festival," reads the press release.
The authorities also regretted sending the previous press release.
A five-member committee, keeping pro vice-chancellor (Admin) Prof Muhammad Samad as the convener, was also formed to formulate a policy in this regard.
Deans of Arts, Social Science and Business Studies faculties and university proctor are the other members of the committee.
The decision of banning rag day celebration sparked widespread criticism among the present and former students of the university.
Former and current students and some teachers took to the social media platforms to criticise the move and vent their anger.
A meeting of the university's Academic Council yesterday decided to ban celebrating "inhuman, brutal, and unethical" festivals in the name of "rag day".
The meeting also recommended to form an "ethical review committee" in all faculties.
