Police begins investigation
Police yesterday began investigating the death of Lance Corporal (retd) Nannu Hossain Miah, who was allegedly killed by staff of a foreign company at Mirsharai Economic Zone in Chattogram.
The mutilated body of Nannu, an employee of Wahid Construction Ltd, was recovered from the Bay near the economic zone on Sunday. He had been missing since Friday night.
Upon recovery of the body, officials of the company filed a case with Jorarganj Police Station accusing employees of China Harbour Engineering Company Limited, a Chinese construction firm.
According to the first information report (FIR), five men of Wahid construction went to take back a speedboat taken away by the staffers of China Harbour at 9pm on Friday, when at least 25 Chinese men attacked them. Nannu among the five remained missing since then, while others managed to flee.
Later, his body, bearing marks of torture, was recovered from the sea near block-1 of China Harbour.
Noor E Alam Mina, superintendent of police (SP) (Chattogram district), told The Daily Star that they visited the spot yesterday morning and collected information and evidence.
“We talked to officials of both the companies. Right now, we cannot say anything for the sake of investigation. But the case is being handled very seriously,” said the SP.
ASP Jonayed Jahidi of Rapid Action Batallion-7 said they visited the spot and talked to locals . “We got to know that there was hostility between locals and employees of the foreign company,” he added.
