Mother placed on 5-day fresh remand

A Dhaka court yesterday placed Mahfuza Malek Jasmine on a fresh five-day remand in connection with murders of her two children in Banasree.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Alamgir Kabir Raj passed the order after Lokman Hakim, an inspector of the Detective Branch of police and also the investigation officer of the case, sought a 10-day remand, said Lokman.

On March 4, Mahfuza was placed on a five-day remand in the case.

Nusrat Aman Aroni, 14, and her brother Alvi Aman, 6, were found unconscious at their apartment and declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on February 29.

Three days later, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) told the press that they were killed by their mother out of her "concerns about their future." And Mahfuza made up a food-poisoning story to cover it up.

According to Rab, she first strangled her daughter Nusrat and then son Alvi. Following the revelation, the siblings' father Amanullah filed a case against his wife.

Law enforcers detained five others for questioning in this regard and later freed.
