Japan to donate $32.5m for Rohingya refugees

Japan has announced an additional funding of $32.5 million as humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees and host communities in Cox's Bazar.

The announcement came at the launch of the UN Joint Response Plan for Bangladesh in Geneva on February 15.

Since the massive influx of refugees into Bangladesh in August 2017, the Government of Japan had granted approximately $50.2 million to international organisations. Adding this additional support, the total amount of assistance has reached approximately $82.7 million, said the press release.

This aid will be donated through site management of refugee camps, providing food, shelter, medical services and trainings, and WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) facilities and forest regeneration through the UN agencies and international organisations.

The organisations are: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, International Organization for Migration, United Nations Population Fund, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, UN Women, World Food Programme, World Health Organization, International Committee of the Red Cross, Global Partnership for Education, and Médecins Sans Frontières.

The United States and European Union immediately after the 2019 UN Joint Response Plan meet on Feb 15, announced additional fundings of $60 million and €24 million ($27 million) respectively as humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees.
