The Election Commission (EC) wants to hold elections to the Dhaka north and south city corporations in January next year, Md Alamgir, senior secretary of the constitutional body, said today.
“The voting of the two city corporations will be held in mid-January or at the end of January next year,” Alamgir said while addressing a press conference at the commission's Agargaon office in Dhaka this afternoon.
The EC will declare the schedule for the elections any day after November 18, he said, adding that the elections will be held using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with current voter list.
Responding to a query whether there is any legal complexity in holding the elections, Alamgir said, “We didn’t get any legal difficulties till now.”
“Of course, it is a challenge for the commission to hold the elections using the EVMs, despite this, the commission will be able to arrange the elections,” the EC official told a questioner.
“We have already received a letter from the local government ministry to arrange the elections,” he added.
About Chattogram City Corporation elections, Alamgir said the commission did not take any decision in this regard, but the voting might be held in March or later with new voter list.
