Ctg prison escapee arrested in Narsingdi
To escape, he jumped off a four-storey under-construction building and landed on the other side of the boundary wall.
It was a 60-foot long jump and he apparently made it while sustaining injuries to his left leg and head.
With the injuries, he managed to board a Dhaka-bound train from Chattogram Railway Station and left the port city to avoid arrest.
The above incident took place at Chattogram jail on Saturday morning when murder accused inmate Farhad Hossain Rubel escaped the high security jail.
Law enforcers revealed the information after Rubel was arrested from Narsingdi around noon yesterday.
"Rubel jumped off the four storied under-construction building, known as 32 Cell Building, and landed on the other side of the boundary wall," said Palash Kanti Nath, additional deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
"The distance between the rooftop and the landing point was around 60 feet. Rubel also sustained injuries, following the jump," added the ADC, speaking at a press conference at Kotwali Police Station.
"It was hard to believe… but after scrutinising CCTV footage we were sure. It showed he jumped off the building around 5:30am," the official added.
"We are trying to learn about the incident in detail from him," he said.
According to law enforcers, a team of Kotwali police arrested Rubel from a relative's house at Vella Kandir Char in Raipur upazila. He was brought back to Chattogram around 3pm. Rubel was kept at the deputy commissioner's (south) office.
Rubel had gone missing around 6:30am on Saturday. A departmental case was lodged and two prison guards were suspended in this connection. The jailer and a deputy jailer were also withdrawn.
A three-member committee, led by DIG prisons (Khulna division) Md Sagir Mia, was formed to investigate the incident. "We have confirmed that he jumped off the building after analysing the CCTV footage," he told this correspondent.
"We will submit our report after probing all the issues," said the DIG. He was taken to court, that sent him to jail, according to police.
