Constable held for bid to snatch Tk10.5 lakh

A police constable was detained today for allegedly trying to snatch Tk 10.5 lakh in Motijheel area of Dhaka.

The detainee, Mamun, a police constable of Bangshal Police Station, and his friend Jitu tried to snatch Tk 10.5 lakh from one Abul Kalam this afternoon, Omar Faruque, officer-in-charge of Motijheel Police Station, told The Daily Star. 

Jitu hit on the head of Abul Kalam, a businessman when he came out of a bank with the money to make him unconscious. Then, the duo picked him up on a motorcycle, the OC said.

But locals obstructed the bike after Abul Kalam regained consciousness and started to shout in front of Mohammedan Sporting Club around 3:30pm.

Hearing his screaming, locals caught Mamun and handed him over to the police, but Jitu managed to flee the scene.

Asked about why he got involved with robbery, Mamun said that he was in debt, the OC added.
