'Attempted Land Grabbing, Extortion'

Another case filed against Dr Zafrullah

A second case has been filed against Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury in Savar's Ashulia, for allegedly attempting to grab land and demanding extortion.

The cases come within a week after a general diary was filed against Chowdhury with the Cantonment Police Station in the capital, over recent remarks on Army Chief Gen Aziz Ahmed at a TV programme, that were termed “motivated, malicious and conspiratorial” and the act as tantamount to sedition.

Hasan Imam, a caretaker of 1.96 acres of land in Savar's Dendabar area filed the case with Ashulia Police Station against him, three named and 30 unnamed people on Friday night.

In the case statement, the complainant said he oversees 1.96 acres of land owned by one Aminul Islam, beside Gonoshasthaya Kendra. On October 13, three accused -- Delwar Hossain, Saiful Islam Shishir and Abdul Kader -- along with 30 to 40 unnamed people entered the property when he along with some workers went to the land for construction work. They threatened the complainant and workers to stop construction, and damaged boundary walls, worth Tk 5 lakh.

The accused also gave death threats to the complainant, and asked him to hand over the land to Gonoshasthaya as per directive of Dr Zafrullah, or pay Tk 50 lakh.

The Daily Star could not reach Aminul Islam for comment.

Javed Masud, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station, said they recorded the case based on complainant's statement and primary inquiry. They are investigating the case, he said.

Earlier, on October 15, another case was filed against Zafrullah and three named and three to four unnamed people with the same Police Station with similar claims.
