Another boat sinks in Karnaphuli

Youth dies, another missing after Coast Guard rescue 14 people

A youth died and another remained missing after a passenger boat capsized at Ghat No-12 of the ​river Karnaphuli in Patenga of Chattogram yesterday morning.

Lt Commander Habibur Rahman, staff officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard (east zone) told The Daily Star, "After the incident, a coastguard team rescued 14 instantly, out of 15 passengers. With injuries, three people were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where one of them was declared dead."

"The accident took place around 8:45am when a wooden engine-driven boat was crossing the river from Patenga Ghat No-12 to Anwara," he said.

The deceased was identified as Saikat Barua (28), son of Prashanta Barua, a resident of Shah Mirpur in Karnaphuli upazila, he said.

A garment worker, Fahim Al Faruk Ovi (22), remained missing till filing of this report yesterday.

The injured -- Salauddin (40) and Ibrahim (25) -- were undergoing treatment at CMCH, said Habibur Rahman.
