AL factional clash leaves four injured in Ctg
At least four people were injured in a clash between activists of Awami League and Swechhasebok League in port city’s Lalkhan Bazar area yesterday, over establishing supremacy.
The clash ensued at Baggona around 3:30pm and lasted for almost an hour, disrupting vehicular movement.
Hamid Ullah, assistant sub-inspector of CMCH police outpost, said four youths, aged between 20 and 25, were admitted to the hospital.
A witness said one of the injured had wounds from gun pellets.
According to witnesses, the clash took place between followers of Abul Hasnat Mohammad Belal, a leader of Chattogram city Swecchasebok League, and Didarul Alam Masum, acting general secretary of Lalkhan Bazar ward AL.
Contacted, Belal said they organised a rally, protesting a recent attack on a Jubo League activist.
“We also took permission from police and urged them to provide necessary protection. At the end of the rally, followers of Masum attacked us. They also fired shots at us,” he alleged.
Refuting the allegations, Masum said Belal’s followers vandalised their [Awami League] party office and vehicles.
While visiting the area, brickbats were seen scattered on the road, where the groups locked in the clash. A window pane of AL’s party office was found broken.
Meanwhile, the groups were seen engaged in the clash for at least 30 minutes in CCTV footage from a nearby building. During the time, this correspondent saw law enforcers standing nearby, taking no action.
The two groups stopped when police intervened at 4:30pm.
Bijoy Bosak, deputy commissioner (north) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, said the incident took place over establishing supremacy. It did not cause much disruption as police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, he added.
