Accused Ripon on five-day remand
A court in Chattogram yesterday placed an inmate on a five-day remand in connection with the murder of Amit Muhuri, a notorious criminal, who was killed inside Chattogram Central Jail (CCJ) on May 29.
The court of Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Mohiuddin Murad passed the remand order against Ripon Nath after police placed a ten-day remand prayer.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (prosecution) Md Kamruzzaman of Chattogram Metropolitan Police said on Thursday, the investigation officer of the case pleaded before the court to show Ripon arrested in the case and sought a ten-day remand for interrogation. The court granted a five-day remand, said the ADC.
Amit, an accused in 15 cases including two for murder, was killed inside the jail allegedly by another inmate Ripon Nath. After the incident, jailor of CCJ, Nasir Ahmed filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station accusing Ripon.
According to the case statement, Amit “engaged in a fight” with Ripon at cell 32 and “hit” him in the head with a brick. Critically injured Amit was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital around 10pm, where he died around 1am.
Deputy Commissioner of CMP DB’s North Division Mizanur Rahman said, “In primary interrogation, Ripon confessed to killing Amit by hitting him in the head with a brick, but kept mum when he was asked about the reason.”
