7 killed, 18 injured in road accidents

Seven people were killed and 18 injured in road accidents in five districts during the last two days, according to reports from our correspondents.

In Madaripur, a truck driver and his helper were killed and 15 injured as the vehicle and a truck collided head-on on Dhaka-Barishal highway in Bhanga bridge area of Kalkini upazila yesterday.

Truck driver Abu Bakar, 34, and his helper Niloy Mollah, 18, died on the spot, Dashar Police Station Sub-inspector Delowar Hossain quoted locals as saying.

The injured were taken to Madaripur General Hospital, he said, adding that both the vehicles were seized.  

In Benapole, a man was killed as a bus hit him on Benapole-Jashore highway in Amrakhali area yesterday.

Sahadat Hossain Nadu, 45, from Benapole area in Jashore, died on the spot, said Masud Karim, officer-in-charge of Benapole Port Police Station.

Locals intercepted the vehicle. The driver and his helper managed to escape.

A case was filed with the police station.

Meanwhile, a rickshaw-van driver was killed after a truck hit it in front of Benapole port yesterday. Ali Akbar, 40, who died instantly, was from Puttapura village in Benapole, said locals.

In Mymensingh, a madrasa student died as a battery-run auto-rickshaw ran her over while the 12-year-old was crossing Imadpur-Khila road at Katuli Bazar in Phulpur upazila to go to the institution yesterday.

The victim -- Suhada Akter, daughter of Abdul Jalil from Katuli village in Phulpur -- was a student of local Sautul Hera Adarsha Mahila Qaumi Madrasa, said Phulpur police.

Police seized the auto-rickshaw but its driver fled the scene. A case was lodged with the police station.

In Sylhet, a man was killed and three people were injured as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a bus collided head-on on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Lalabazar of Dakshin Surma yesterday.

Abdul Kaiyum, 35, died on the spot.

The injured -- Dilara Begum, 40, and her daughters Nawshin Begum, 18, and Sanjida Begum, 8 -- were undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said Khairul Fazal, OC of Dakshin Surma police.

In Chattogram, a woman was killed as a bus ran her over while she was crossing a road at the city’s Tiger Pass intersection on Tuesday night.

Kajali Saha, 55, was declared dead at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said CMCH police.
