National recognition for Justice Debesh urged

Marking the centenary of Justice Debesh Bhattacharya's birth, a meeting was held in Abdul Karim Shahitto Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy in the capital yesterday.

The Birth Centenary Celebration Committee for Justice Debesh Bhattacharya organised the meeting where different aspects of his life, social activities including his role in promoting women's movement and his compassion for the rights of the marginalised were highlighted.

The committee placed many propositions including national award for Justice Debesh in acknowledgement of his patriotism and services to the nations, publishing Justice Debesh's verdicts systematically for future reference and naming a street after Justice Debesh, an uncompromising protector of democracy, human rights and rule of the law.

Former finance minister M Syeduzzaman, educationist Dr Maleka Begum, President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Ayesha Khanam and President of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir also spoke at the event which was chaired by Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman, convener of the celebration committee.
