Mawna OC accused of beating driver

A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver was hospitalised yesterday after the Mawna Highway Police Station o%cer-in-charge (OC) allegedly assaulted him and broke the windshield of another three-wheeler for plying on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

The government banned the vehicles from plying on highways from August 1.

Raihan, 21, has been admitted to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex with swollen hands and feet, as per his father Amin Uddin of Tengra village at Gazipur's Sreepur.

The victim told The Daily Star that OC Helalul   Islam assaulted him at the Mawna intersection around 11:00am. The other driver, Abdus Samad, said the OC soon afterwards broke the windshield of the nearby vehicle.

The OC refuted beating Raihan. He, without elaborating, said they had “orders from high-ups to vandalise” the three-wheelers found on highways.
