Customs officials detained a person with eight gold bars, weighing 800 grams, hidden inside his body at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka this morning.

Soon after boarding off from a Biman Bangladesh flight around 5:25am, Md Kamal was challenged by the custom authorities for having gold bars with him, Rezaul Karim, assistant commissioner of customs, told The Daily Star.

Although Kamal denied at first, he later admitted to carrying the gold bars worth Tk 40 lakhs in his rectum when he was threatened he might have to undergo surgery, the custom official said.

Hailing from Comilla, Kamal landed at the airport on Biman Bangladesh Airlines No. BG 087 from Malaysia, the customs official added.
