Forge national unity, rise above political identity
Eminent Jurist Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday called upon the people to forge a national unity, upholding the spirit of independence, to ensure people's democratic rights.
“According to the constitution, people are the real owner of the state and if they stay united, they surely can keep their ownership,” he said at a felicitation programme at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
Jatiya Oikya Prokriya organised the programme congratulating Dr Kamal Hossain for receiving “Doctor of Law” degree from University of Notre Dame, USA.
Citing instances of mass movements waged from 1952 to 1971, he said that the people gained victory in 1971 with their united efforts.
If the same unity is formed then the people can access their power by electing their representatives for the state and democracy will function properly, he said.
“There is nothing more important than being a citizen of a free country,” he said while urging all to rise above political identity.
Reminding the divide and rule system of the British, he also said that if people are not united, nothing can be achieved.
Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah, public health activist Zafrullah Chowdhury, Editor in Charge of The Asian Age Syed Badrul Ahsan and member secretary of Jatiya Oikya Prokriya ABM Mostafa Amin were present at the programme.
