Bus driver arrested

The bus driver, who ran over a university student in Mirpur last Monday, was arrested from Laxmipur district early yesterday.

The arrestee was identified as Hanif alias Munna, 34, a driver of Dishari Paribahan.

Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station, told The Daily Star that based on information, they arrested Hanif from his native village.

Earlier, agitated students of BUBT had taken to the streets demanding arrest and punishment of the driver. Yesterday, they withdrew their demonstration with a 72-hour ultimatum for the arrest.

Hanif, driver of Dishari Paribahan bus plying in Dhaka, ran over BBA final year student of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) Masud Rana on Monday. He had been on the run since then.

In primary interrogation, Hanif admitted about the incident, and told police that the accident happened due to a brake failure, said OC Anwar.
