The Department of Law at North South University (NSU) successfully convened a webinar titled "Extraterritoriality's Empire: How Self-Determination Limits Extraterritorial Lawmaking" on January 29, 2025. The event was graced by a keynote address from Professor Evan J Criddle, Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development, William & Mary Law School, who offered insights into the intersection of self-determination and extraterritorial legal frameworks.

The session was moderated by Professor Md Rizwanul Islam, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and a professor at the Department of Law, NSU. The proceedings commenced with introductory remarks from Dr Ishtiaque Ahmed, Chairman of the Department of Law, NSU, who underscored the significance of critically examining the legal and philosophical constraints on extraterritorial lawmaking.

In his keynote address, Professor Criddle explained how the fundamental principles of self-determination serve to curtail the exercise of extraterritorial jurisdiction by states. His discourse provoked a rich and thought-provoking dialogue, illuminating the inherent limitations of enforcing international legal mandates within domestic jurisdictions. Furthermore, he offered a nuanced analysis of potential solutions to address these legal complexities.

The webinar attracted a diverse audience, comprising prominent Bangladeshi and international legal scholars, academics, faculty members of NSU, students, and legal practitioners. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment, where attendees actively contributed to the discussion, further enriching the intellectual discourse.
