Interns at Khulna Medical College Hospital have enforced a work abstention from today, demanding safety of its doctors and students following yesterday's clash between pharmacy staffers and students.

They also held the administration, college and hospital authorities accountable for the clash, according to a press release issued by interns last night.

Dr Mehedi Newaz, vice-principal of Khulna Medical College, told reporters that a student of the medical college locked into an argument with a shopkeeper at a drugstore over purchasing medicine in front of the college yesterday.

At one point, several shopkeepers teamed up and beat up the student. When other students came to know about it, they went to the drugstore and the shopkeepers beat them up too, leaving 15 students injured, he said.

Sheikh Imran, ADC (South) of Khulna Metropolitan Police, said police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

"Efforts are on to nab the attackers. Additional police have been deployed in front of the medical college hospital and medicine shops," the officer added.
