RU authorities file GD against “illegal” recruits
The authorities of Rajshahi University have filed a General Diary (GD) with the city's Matihar Police Station against teachers, officials and staffers who were recruited "illegally" recently.
The GD was filed this afternoon on behalf of RU acting Vice-chancellor Professor Ananda Kumar Saha, Siddiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station, told our RU correspondent.
The Daily Star has acquired a copy of the GD.
In an attachment to the GD, Prof Ananda Kumar Saha said, "Those who were recruited by former RU VC Prof M Abdus Sobhan on May 6 this year, his last day at the office, have continued to pressure the university administration, including me, to allow them to join their workplace.
"On June 19, at 9:30am in the morning, some 50-60 of the recruited persons agitated in front of my residence, causing panic among my wife and daughters. The recruits, including Firoz Mahmud and Matiur Rahman Murtaja, continued the agitation for nearly two hours within the compound of my residence and created an anarchic situation," Prof Saha said.
"Also, on June 22, some recruits, including Indraneil Mishra and Shahriar Mahbub, demonstrated in front of my residence around 6:00pm in the evening," he said.
"Due to their obstruction, the RU Syndicate meetings scheduled for June 19 and June 22 could not be held. The regular activities of the university are thus being hampered as the two important meetings had to be suspended," the RU acting VC added.
Talking to The Daily Star, Prof Saha said he had informed the RU registrar to take necessary legal steps in this regard to maintain discipline within the university and ensure safety for him and his family members, adding that the GD was filed in accordance to his request.
RU Registrar Prof Abdus Salam also confirmed the matter.
On June 19, RU authorities were forced to suspend their financial committee meeting after aggrieved recruits locked the administrative building, senate building and the VC's residence.
On June 20, they confined treasurer Prof AKM Mostafizur Rahman Al Arif to his office for four hours.
The next day, some local Awami League leaders met the university authority and held a discussion to resolve the situation. After the meeting, the recruits postponed their movement as the local leaders told them that they will work to meet their demands.
On May 31, they confined four top university officials, including the acting VC, in a similar fashion and demanded they be allowed to join work.
On his last day in office on May 6, Prof Sobhan recruited at least 137 people, including nine teachers, sparking protests on campus. The education ministry termed the recruitment illegal on the same day and initiated an investigation.
On May 8, the RU administration suspended the recruitment process.
