Restaurant owners demand VAT cut
The restaurant owners today urged the government to reduce value-added tax (VAT) on fast food sellers to 7.5 per cent from the existing 15 per cent.
They also demanded keeping the VAT rate in between 3-5 per cent for lower and middle category eateries and street foods.
For canteens and cafeterias of educational institutions, industries and foods sold in hostels, they want the rate to be fixed at highest 2 per cent.
Imran Hasan, secretary general of Bangladesh Restaurant Owners Association, placed the demands on behalf of the association in a press conference at its Purana Paltan office in Dhaka.
Most of the restaurants are not using electronic fiscal devices and the ones which are using the machine are facing losses, he said.
"So, the authorities concerned should ensure that the EFDs are set up in all restaurants."
