The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has announced names of 141 highest taxpaying individuals and companies in order to honour them with tax cards for their exemplary compliance for the year 2019-20.
Of the winners, Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, Founder and Chairman of Transcom Group late Latifur Rahman and Chairman of BSRM Alihussain Akberali once again became top taxpayers in senior citizen category.
Transcom Chairman Shahnaz Rahman was announced top female taxpayer.
The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, Editor of Chattogram based daily Dainik Azadi MA Malek, Director and Head of News of Channel i Shykh Seraj and Editor-in-Chief of TV Today Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul have been named highest taxpayers among journalists.
In the media category, The Daily Star's owning company Mediaworld Ltd, its printer Transcraft Ltd and Prothom Alo's owner Mediastar have been selected for the tax cards.
Mediaworld Ltd, Mediastar Ltd and the printer of the dailies Transcraft Ltd once again topped the list of taxpayers in print and electronic media category.
The three companies are sister concerns of Transcom Group, one of the largest conglomerates in Bangladesh.
East West Media Group is another highest taxpayer in this category, according to the NBR notification.
And Kaus Mia, who has been topping the list of top taxpayers in the businessperson category since 2010, again became the top taxpayer in the category.
This is the ninth year since the fiscal 2010-11 when the NBR started honouring top taxpayers. Initially, it began recognising taxpayers in only two categories -- individuals and companies -- with 10 tax cards for each to encourage compliance in the country where just over one percent of the population file returns and tax avoidance is believed to be high.
The tax authority later -- from fiscal 2015-16 -- expanded the list under the amended, comprehensive tax card policy as many taxpayers had been left out of the recognition despite regularly furnishing the state coffers with sizeable sums.
Both editors of The Daily Star and the Prothom Alo, and the owning firms of the two dailies and their printer, started receiving the honour in their respective categories from 2015-16, when the NBR expanded the list of the awardees to include various professions and areas.
During the fiscal year 2019-20, the NBR named 75 individuals, 53 companies and 12 in other categories as highest taxpayers.
The tax authority is expected to honour the highest taxpayers with cards and crests on February 11. This year, the NBR is likely to hold the event on a limited scale because of the Covid-19 pandemic, said a senior official of the NBR.
