ADB reaffirms support for Bangladesh’s reform drive, sustainable growth

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has reaffirmed its strong commitment to Bangladesh's reform agenda and sustainable development, as the country prepares to graduate from the least developed country status.
During a bilateral meeting held today at Milan of Italy, as part of the ADB's 58th Annual Meeting, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed and ADB President Masato Kanda discussed continued cooperation in policy reforms, climate resilience, and development assistance, according to a finance ministry press release.
Ahmed appreciated ADB's longstanding support in different sectors, including infrastructure, energy, education, health and climate adaptation.
He noted that the global lender's total portfolio in Bangladesh now stands at $32.5 billion, with $2.94 billion committed in fiscal year 2023-24 alone.
He pointed out the need to align ADB's assistance with Bangladesh's evolving priorities as it undergoes structural transformation under a reform-driven government.
Highlighting a historic political shift led by a student movement, he called on ADB to back governance reforms, transparency, and improved public service delivery.
The finance adviser proposed deeper engagement in strategic areas, such as integrated river management, a blue economy master plan, digital health services, modernisation of tax administration, and future-ready education.
He also sought ADB's support for sustainable urban development and expansion of renewable energy and regional power trade.
"Enhanced concessional support from ADB is not only vital for sustaining Bangladesh's development momentum, but also a strategic investment in regional stability, effective climate action, and inclusive growth," the finance adviser said.
The ADB president commended Bangladesh's economic progress and resilience, reaffirming the bank's commitment.
He said Bangladesh's proposals would be seriously considered and stressed ADB's readiness to continue supporting the country's development journey.
He added that Bangladesh has always been a key partner for ADB and will remain so in the future.
