NBR intensifies monitoring of tax deduction at source

Star Business Report

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has strengthened its nationwide monitoring and verification of tax deducted at source, aiming to increase revenue collection.

In a press release issued yesterday, NBR said special teams formed under the tax zones have started monitoring. As part of their work, taxmen can enter and inspect any business or office under the Income Tax Act, 2023.

Tax officials are now empowered to examine books of account, bank statements, receipts, digital records, and other relevant documents.

They may also access computer systems and electronic devices and, where necessary, bypass passwords or encryption to obtain information.

Officials are further authorised to temporarily seize documents or electronic devices and make copies of records, according to the press release.

The tax authority warned against hindering these teams, saying that penalties apply for obstruction or non-cooperation with such activities under section 147(2) of the law.

Taxpayers have been urged to deposit tax deduction at source through the Automated Challan System (A-Challan) by mentioning the appropriate provision of the law and the correct economic code.

For queries or grievances regarding Section 147, NBR suggested that taxpayers contact the member secretary of the NBR’s related committee at [email protected].
