BAU students, teachers continue class boycott
General students of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) continued their demonstration for the 7th consecutive day yesterday demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers of Saad Ibney Momtaj, a final-year student of BAU fisheries faculty.
Saad Ibne Momtaz, 23, also former organising secretary of Ashraful Haque Hall committee of BCL, succumbed to his injuries at a private clinic on April 1, a day after Chhatra League leaders had beaten him up with hockey sticks, iron rods and cricket stumps in room No 205 of the hall.
Around 11:30am yesterday, the BAU students accompanied by hundreds of teachers under the platform of BAU Teachers Association (BAUTA) brought out a procession demanding capital punishment of Saad killers and their life term expulsion from the university.
"We will resume the classes from Wednesday if life term expulsion of Saad killers from the university is ensured at the emergency meeting of 'Board of Residence and Students' Discipline' that is due at around 9:00pm on Tuesday. We also demand that the university administration take necessary steps so that the authorities concerned ensure capital punishment of the killers," said Prof Md Abu Hadi Noor Ali Khan, general secretary of BAUTA.
Earlier, at a press conference at around 10:30am, teachers of the fisheries faculty mentioned their demands that include capital punishment of Saad killers under Speedy Trial Act, irrefutable life term expulsion of the killers from BAU, removal of Ashraful Haque Hall Provost Prof Md Rafiqul Islam and Assistant Proctor Siddiqur Rahman from the committee formed to probe Saad murder, and adequate security measured for teachers, students and staffs on the campus.
They also demanded immediate removal of Students Affairs Advisor Prof Md Sultan Uddin Bhuiya, Proctor Prof Md Shahidur Rahman Khan and Provost of Ashraful Haque Hall Prof Md Rafiqul Islam for their laxity in duties.
Meanwhile, leaders of a few students' associations under the banner of 'Sangrami Sadharon Chhatra Janota' brought out a silent procession on the campus at around 4:00pm demanding fair trial of Saad killing.
