Bangladeshi beaten to death in India
A Bangladeshi cattle trader was beaten to death allegedly by Indians along Dhabolguri border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat early yesterday.
The dead is Abdul Haque, 46, son of Kafor Uddin in Tepurgari village of the upazila.
Quoting sources of Falakata 35 camp Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in Coochbehar district of West Bengal, Subedar Jonab Ali, Patgram BGB company camp commander, said villagers of Falakata in India caught Haque red-handed while he was “stealing” cattle from a house in the early hours of yesterday.
They then beat him up mercilessly, leaving Haque dead on the spot, said Jonab Ali.
But locals of Tepurgari claimed that Haque was a cattle trader but not a thief, the Border Guard Bangladesh official added.
Haque might have been killed by Indian cattle smugglers following internal feuds over cattle smuggling, he said.
The victim's father Kafor Uddin said his son went to the Indian village Falakata on Thursday evening for bringing some cattle to Bangladesh.
He alleged that other cattle traders of the village might have killed Haque over internal feuds.
Lt Col Shafiul Alam Khan, commanding officer of Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion, confirmed the incident, and said they sent a protest letter to the Falakata BSF against the killing yesterday noon.
The body of Haque would be handed over to the Lalmonirhat BGB after an autopsy in India, the BGB sources said.
