Online registration process for JU admission starts June 1

The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has decided to start its online registration process for the 2020-21 academic session from June 1 to June 15.

Central Admission Test Management Committee of the JU took the decision through a virtual meeting held on Thursday, said Md Abu Hasan, member secretary of the committee.

Considering the pandemic, the date for holding admission tests has not been set yet. It will be done after completion of the application process in two phases.

The admission seekers will have to apply in two phases. The first phase will start from June 24 to June 29 and the second will continue from July 1 to July 7, he added.

In the first phase, the candidates will register at Tk 55.

In the second phase, the candidates, if they are selected through the first phase, will pay the remaining fee of Tk 1,100.

This year, the authorities have increased the total fee for five faculties -- A, B, C, D and E units -- from Tk 600-Tk 1,155 and other institutes from Tk 400 to Tk 755.

"The preliminary application fee has been fixed at Tk 55. Final applications will be taken on the basis of students' GPA obtained in higher secondary or equivalent examinations. After completion of the scrutinising process of the preliminary applications, the qualified students have to submit the final applications," said Abu Hasan.

A total of 72,000 applicants would be eligible to sit for the tests under A, B, C, and D units following the preliminary selection test. Besides, a maximum 9,000 applicants can sit for Law and Business faculties while 4,500 can sit for the other institutes.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Somajtrantrik Chhatra Front yesterday protested the fee hike for the application forms.

In a statement, JU Chhatra Union said, "When most of the people in the country are financially distressed in pandemic, such a decision has been taken by the JU administration. It will deprive the real meritorious of the opportunity to study in the university."

The organisations also demanded that the JU authorities modify the decision immediately by updating the selection process and reducing the application fee.
