Ensure security of candidates: BNP writes to EC

BNP, in a letter, today called upon the Election Commission to take effective steps for ensuring overall security so that the party and the Jatiya Oikyafront’s candidates can conduct their electioneering in a free and fair manner.

BNP and Oikyafront’s candidates are being harassed and arrested and many of them are being attacked by the ruling party men during their electioneering across the country, BNP said in the letter.

BNP Vice Chairman Selima Rahman and Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal submitted a total of five letters to the EC seeking its steps on different issues to hold the upcoming general election in a credible and participatory manner.

Citing several instances of attacks carried out on their party men, BNP, in the letter, urged the EC to take legal action against the attackers so that the attackers are forced to refrain from such unlawful activities ahead of the election.

“The Election Commission will be held responsible if it does not act accordingly,” according to the letter signed by the party’s Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan.

BNP also asked the EC to ensure police protection for the candidates of the Oikyafront alongside its own candidates.

In a separate letter, BNP mentioned that the party’s official website -- bnpbangladesh.com -- has been blocked for the last three days and urged the EC to take a step for unblocking the website.

Hafiz Uddin Ahmed sought security on launch

BNP candidate for Bhola-3 constituency Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed today sought security from the Election Commission so that he can board a launch to reach his own constituency.

The BNP leader claimed that he somehow managed to escape from Sadarghat Launch Terminal where he faced a dire situation due to lack of security. He said that he could have been at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) today.

Hafiz Uddin went to the EC around 5:15pm and submitted a written complaint to Election Commissioner Shahadat Hossain, our staff correspondent reports.

The BNP leader told reporters that he was scheduled to go to his constituency boarding a launch Tasrif-4. He went to the launch terminal around 6:00pm and was informed that Chhatra League and Jubo League men had taken control of the vessel, he claimed.

They guided the vessel to the mid-river and vandalised 40 cabins, he also said adding that he somehow managed to escape with his life.

He informed that he has never been beaten in his political career and if he can go to his constituency he will win the elections. That’s why he sought security from the Commission so that he can board a launch safely.
