I'm concerned for my safety

BNP's Zahiruddin Swapan writes to EC

Zahiruddin Swapan, a BNP-nominated aspirant for Barishal-1 constituency, yesterday sent a letter to the Election Commission seeking security for his family and party men under the Representation of the People Order (RPO).

The BNP leader in his letter claimed that he is afraid of being attacked as Gournadi upazila unit Awami League General Secretary Harisur Rahman has been delivering provocative speeches at rallies and meetings -- threatening to harm him (Swapan).

“It came to my attention when many newspapers picked it up, and video footage went viral on social media,” he wrote in the letter.

It also claimed that following Harisur's provocative speeches, local AL men are attacking BNP supporters and damaging their houses, even after the polls schedule was announced.

“Under the circumstances, I am concerned for my safety and the security of my family and party men,” he wrote.

Swapan submitted the letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in the afternoon.

The CEC assured that the commission will ensure security of voters and candidates, Swapan told journalists.

“He also assured of providing necessary support for my election campaign,” he added.
