SC puts bar on candidacies of Luna, Jahangir

Another candidate of the BNP, Tahsin Rushdir Luna, had her hopes of running in the elections dashed at the Supreme Court today.

A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed “no order” on Luna’s appeal for candidacy.

Thereby, Luna, wife of missing BNP leader Ilias Ali, cannot contest the election from Sylhet-2 constituency, plunging BNP into fresh woes for the seat.

Previously, the Election Commission had allowed Luna to run for candidacy, what was stayed at High Court after being challenged by Jatiya Party’s candidate Yahia Chowdhury.

Meanwhile, the same bench stayed another HC order asking the EC to allow BNP candidate Syed Jahangir to contest the election from Dinajpur-3 constituency.

Following the apex court order, Jahangir Alam cannot contest the election, his lawyer Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal told The Daily Star.

The order came following a petition filed by Ashraful Islam, a Bikolpo Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) candidate for the constituency, seeking stay on the HC order.

Ashaful’s lawyer Advocate AM Aminuddin said that the returning officer had cancelled the nomination paper of Jahangir as he is holding the office of Dinajpur municipality chairman and then the EC upheld the returning officer’s decision.

Following a writ petition filed by Jahangir, the HC recently ordered the EC to accept his nomination paper and to allow him to run the polls.
