The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) today demanded of the government to immediately send BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to specialised United Hospital for her treatment.

The government is pushing Khaleda, a leader of the greatest political party, to death by keeping her in an isolated prison, SCBA President Advocate Zainul Abedin said.

He was speaking at a press conference at the SCBA auditorium in Dhaka this afternoon.

"We have come to know that the present situation of Khaleda Zia is very bad as she is affected by different complicated diseases we are very much concerned about her, we feel her human rights are being violated" he said.

Zainul Abedin said that it is not possible to treat these complicated diseases by keeping her in the prison.

The house where Khaleda is kept is not a regular prison house, it is an isolated museum, he said adding that the government is willfully making the BNP chairperson sick by keeping her in this very uncomfortable house.

Today a confusion has been created in people's mind about the judiciary, he said.

Already the government has forced a chief justice to leave.

Therefore, the people feel that the bail of Khaleda Zia might have been stayed under the government influence.

Even then, we have faith on the apex court and we hope that this court will grant bail to Khaleda on May 8 after examining all the aspects, he added.

SCBA Secretary AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon also spoke on the occasion. 

The government has shown ignorance to the court by taking BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia back to the jail without informing it (court) about her treatment, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Zainul Abedin said today.

Khaleda Zia had been admitted to the hospital (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) for her treatment in line with a High Court directive, but the authorities concerned have taken her back to the jail without informing the court which is regretful, he said.

Advocate Zainul Abedin, also a vice chairman of BNP, came up with the remarkswhile speaking at a press conference organised by the SCBA, dominated by the pro-BNP lawyers, at its auditorium.

He said the government wants that Khaleda Zia dies without treatment and therefore, the countrymen including the lawyers are concerned with this.

In this situation, a confusion has been created whether the upcoming parliamentary election will be held in a fair manner and even whether the election will take place or not, the SCBA president said.

Advocate Zainul, also a lawyer for Khaleda, urged the government to send Khaleda Zia to the hospital again and to keep her at the hospital until a medical board is formed for her treatment.

Demanding release of Khaleda from jail, the BNP leader said the lawyers for Khaleda had submitted an application to the authorities concerned on November 6 for a permission to visit her, but the application was not granted yet.

Khaleda Zia was taken back to the jail with bag and baggage with a half-an-hour notice today, he claimed.

The High Court today granted anticipatory bail to Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Advocate Zainul Abedin and its Secretary Barrister KM Mahbubuddin Khokon in three separate criminal cases.

The cases were filed with Ramna Police Station on charges of preventing law enforcers from discharging their duties during the agitation by BNP-led alliance on February 8 when a lower court convicted and sentenced BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a corruption case.

Today, the HC granted bail to Zainul and Khokon, also vice-chairman and joint secretary general of BNP respectively, till submission of the police report to the lower court in the cases.

Sporadic violence on a day of alarm

The HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath passed the orders of bail after hearing separate petitions filed by Zainul and Mahbubuddin seeking anticipatory bails in the cases.

The accused BNP leaders also appeared before the HC bench for bail.

BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed argued for them at the court.
