Today Zia’s 40th death anniversary

The BNP is observing the 40th death anniversary of its founder and former president Ziaur Rahman across the country today.
The party and its associated bodies have drawn up a 15-day programme to observe the death anniversary with due reverence.
The programmes began yesterday and will end on June 12.
The events include arranging virtual discussions, holding photo exhibitions and free medical camps, wearing black badges, publishing posters and supplements in newspapers and distributing food among the destitute.
The BNP said all programmes will be arranged maintaining health safety rules due to the pandemic situation.
Zia, who founded Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1978, was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army officers at Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981.
In observance of the day, black flags will be hoisted atop the offices of BNP and its associated bodies at 6:00am today. Besides, party flags will be flown at half mast.
Senior BNP leaders will place wreaths at Zia's grave at the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the morning.
Yesterday, the party organised a virtual discussion marking the day.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee members will distribute food among the destitute at 80 spots of the capital today and tomorrow. The programmes will be arranged by Dhaka North and South units of BNP.
The party's all district, city and thana units is observing the day holding various programmes, including virtual discussions.
