Khagrachhari Jail: Prisoner found dead in bathroom

A 26-year-old Tripura youth, who was arrested on May 16 in a case filed under the pornography act, was found dead inside the Khagrachhari district jail early yesterday.

The dead is Milon Bikash Tripura of remote Arun Para in Rangamati's Baghaichhari upazila, Executive Magistrate Sajjad Hossen of Khagrachhari district administration, who is also the Khagrachhari jail super, told The Daily Star.

Quoting the jailer Didarul Alam, the jail super said, "Milon was found hanging from an iron rod at the bathroom of an isolation ward around 4:00am. Some 22 inmates are kept at the ward."

He was later taken to Khagrachhari Sadar hospital.

The jail super said three committees were formed to investigate the incident.

Didarul could not be reached for comments over phone despite repeated attempts.

"After receiving information, we went to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital and found Milon dead," said Mohammad Rashid, officer-in-charge of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station.

Khagrachhari Civil Surgeon Nupur Kanti Das said, "We're trying to find the cause of death."

Asked, Nupur said they were not sure yet whether the victim died by suicide. "We can be sure only after the post-mortem."

The jail super said the district administration gave Tk 10,000 to Milon's family for burial.

Talking to this newspaper, police officials in the district said Milon was arrested after a woman filed a case against him accusing him of secretly recording her daughter while she was taking a bath.
