Foreign icons, movies top Google search

Bangladeshi netizens remained keen on foreign personalities and films more, except for a few local items including Khaleda Zia and Hero Alam throughout 2018, suggests the searches they made on Google.

The BNP chairperson who is currently in jail on graft charges made it to the ninth position while Hero Alam, the “social media phenomenon” famous for his music videos, came tenth in the top 10 of “people” category, according to Google Search Trends.

In “topics” category, results of SSC, HSC, Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh vs India cricket matches appeared third, fourth, ninth and tenth respectively.

Except the six items, all other 24 most searched topics, people and movies were foreign, mostly Indian.

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, who became a sensation on social media during FIFA World Cup 2018, was searched by most Bangladeshis. Croatia lost the finale against France but Kolinda was seen hugging and greeting players of both teams and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The wink of Indian actress Priya Prakash Varrier was no less popular among Bangladeshis. Particularly those from Sylhet division searched the clip from Malayalam-language romantic comedy film “Oru Adaar Love” making Priya the second most searched personality of 2018 in “people” category.

American singer Nick Jonas, whose wedding with Indian superstar and former Miss World Priyanka Chopra kept netizens drooling for quite a long time, was searched by Barishal division residents mostly.

The most searched movies of last year include six Bollywood and four Hollywood films. People of Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions searched for the Bollywood ones mostly making “Thugs of Hindostan” number 1 in the list followed by Marvel's “Avengers Infinity War.” No Bangladeshi film made it to the top 10 list.

The Bangladeshi search trends shows three porn-stars in top 10 of “people” category. Among them, Sunny Leone and Mia Malkova were mostly searched from Khulna Division while Mia Khalifa was mostly searched by Dhaka Division residents.

Most searched topic from Bangladesh was sports as seven out of top 10 topics were linked to Indian sports news site Cricbuzz.
