Digital Sylhet City: Free WiFi for people in 65 areas
In a bid to become the first "digital city" of the country, Sylhet now provides free high-speed internet to its residents through WiFi connection.
As part of the Digital Sylhet City project, Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) has installed 126 WiFi access points in 65 important areas of the city. Among them 100 WiFi access points have become operational from March 10.
The other 26 points are down due to the underground cable project progressing in some areas of the city. But those will also be functional soon, said Madho Sudan Chanda, deputy project director of Digital Sylhet City project.
All these access points are named Digital Bangladesh and anyone can connect with the free WiFi with a common password "joybangla".
Chanda said, "Almost 200 users can use internet smoothly at each access point. We developed the system for One Time Password (OTP) for each user every time they try to connect. But at present we are offering open access for them to get used to the service."
As part of the project that is worth Tk 30 crore, 110 IP cameras at important points have also been installed. The control station at Kotwali Police Station is set to be operational soon.
"There are 10 cameras to detect faces of people of interest as per the database and all cameras have auto number plate recognition, so that the traffic and vehicle of interest can be tracked easily," Chanda said, adding that the system would be handed over to Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) soon.
Zedan Al Musa, additional deputy commissioner of SMP, said, "Once the system is fully functional and under control of SMP, it will be a huge game changer for the law enforcement situation of the city."
Monitoring situations, traffic, tracking down wanted criminals, vehicles and many other things can easily be done with the system, the ADC added.
On March 10, State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak visited Sylhet in order to see the progress of the project.
During the visit, the state minister declared that Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH) would be the country's first digital hospital with health management automation system.
The 900-bed hospital is the largest of the region.
Himangshu Lal Roy, deputy director of SOMCH, said, "Once the automation starts, we will be tracking all the records of a patient and will preserve those under a unique code. The records can be availed from the server when needed.
"Under the project, providing healthcare will be easy and the patients will be benefited through the system."
