Banker killed as bus hits autorickshaw
A bank official was killed and two others were injured when a bus hit a CNG-run autorickshaw from behind on Dewanhat flyover in Chattogram city yesterday morning.
The deceased, Anwarul Azim, 55, of Mirsarai upazila, was the assistant vice-president of Islami Bank Bangladesh (IBBL) Ltd's Khatunganj branch in the city.
Azim's colleague Towhidul Islam, first assistant vice-president, and three-wheeler driver Jahir were admitted to hospitals in a critical condition, said police.
Alauddin Talukdar, assistant sub-inspector of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police outpost, said the accident happened around 9:00am when the bus rammed the autorickshaw which was carrying the three people, including the driver.
Quoting witnesses, the ASI said the bus rear-ended the three-wheeler and forced it under a truck in front. The three inside were wounded critically.
The police official said the trio were rushed to the CMCH where the on-duty doctors declared Azim dead.
Miftauddin, manager of IBBL's Khatunganj branch, said Azim and his two other colleagues used to come to the office together by CNG-run autorickshaw.
Fakhrul Islam Taslim, nephew of Azim, said Azim's son is an MBA student at Chittagong University and his daughter is an HSC second-year student.
“The accident occurred due to bus driver's negligence. It's not an accident; rather it's a murder,” said Fakhrul, adding that they would file a case against the driver.
After the accident, police seized the bus from the spot, but the driver managed to flee, said Jahir Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Double Mooring Police Station.
