250 political leaders in Ctg pledge peaceful, nonviolent polls

Around 250 political leaders from Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party of Chattogram division yesterday came on a single platform and pledged nonviolent and peaceful elections.

The atmosphere was festive at the regional launch of the Shantite Bijoy (Win with Peace) campaign with enthusiastic participation by the political leaders of the division held at a hotel in the port city.

At the launch, political leaders of AL, BNP and JP stood together in support of peace and harmony and together vowed to shun violence, said a press release.

General Secretary of Chattogram South District AL Mafizur Rahman said a positive environment would be created through practising democratic attitude and tolerance.

He hoped that the upcoming national election would be peaceful.

President of Chattogram city BNP Shahadat Hossain expressed gratitude to Democracy International, USAID and UKAID to organise such programme.

Prioritising a level-playing field, he said it is possible to build a corruption-free and democratic country by ensuring good governance.

He expressed his hope that a positive environment would be created for peaceful elections.

Jafarul Islam Chowdhury, president of Chattogram South district BNP, General Secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar, Solaiman Alam Sheth, president of city Jatiya Party, Prof Sheikh Md Mohiuddin, former vice-president of South district BNP, Prodip Das, organising secretary of South district AL, Bedarul Alam Choudhury, education and human resources affairs secretary of North district AL, Nazrul Islam Talukder, member of Chattogram North district AL, and Md Salahuddin, former vice-president of Chattogram North district BNP, also spoke at the event.

Moreover, civil society members and socio-cultural activists of the district participated in the programme.

As the national election is approaching, the “Win with Peace” campaign will engage and raise awareness among registered political parties, candidates, and citizens in Bangladesh on the importance of peaceful elections and tolerant politics.

The campaign is providing 16 crore people of Bangladesh with a platform to raise their voices to demand peace, harmony, and tolerant politics.
