Popularising Nazrul Sangeet among the youth
The work of Kazi Nazrul Islam is still very relevant. However, the practices and promotions still need more exploration. Nazrul Sangeet exponent, eminent singer and vocal trainer Sujit Mustafa shares his views on popularising Nazrul's work among the youth with The Daily Star.
“Just two days of celebration is not enough. We need a year-long stimulation of Nazrul's work,” says Sujit Mustafa, on ways to increase the popularity of Nazrul's music. Inclusion of appropriate foreign instruments could enhance its appeal to the audience. Lyrics and tunes are documentations, it cannot be altered but the art of presentation could vary. “We have to flow with time.”There are many promising singers who live in the districts. Lack of self-promotion hold them back from getting the right exposure, according to Mustafa.
To promote and increase the practice of Nazrul Sangeet, Sujit Mustafa suggests that the FM radio stations could have dedicated entire shows to Nazrul's songs and poems. It will also help to build more audience. Countrywide competitions at schools with incentives can also create interest among the youth. “You have to grow the interest first, once it is ingrained it will grow naturally,” he says.
Many students and performers tend to stay away from practicing Nazrul Islam's music for the unresolved confusion of the compositions. “Since there is an institution, they could create a model record based on the original record, which could reduce this confusion,” says Mustafa.
According to Sujit Mustafa, not only Nazrul Islam's music but also his philosophy is more relevant than ever. Humanity, love, equality, secularism, women empowerment, morality are some of the aspects of the great poet's philosophy.
Sujit Mustafa had initiated to publish a magazine called Chakrabakth that was dedicated to highlight the past works and future possibilities of Nazrul. Due to lack of funding the magazine could not see much light. Private and government sponsorships are needed to propagate research and practice of the works of our national poet.
