“If you're an outsider you work that extra bit hard”… Asif Azim

Asif Azim, the Bangladeshi-born model of worldwide fame, was recently rated as one of the top 5 fittest supermodels in India. Born in Amjhupi, Meherpur, he has a postgraduate degree in Economics from Dhaka University, and had his first break in 2002 in a ramp rig for India's ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Later, he caught the eye of South African photographer, Neo Ntsoma, who was in town for a documentary photo-shoot. From those beginnings, Asif's career began, that takes him all across the world today on the most glamorous ramps. The Indian resident was in Dhaka recently, and made time for The Daily Star.
As a Bangladeshi, do you feel like an outsider in India?
Asif: When you are aware that you are an outsider, you have to do whatever it takes to gain their confidence. If you are an adopted child, you will work that extra bit hard to be a part of that family. I live in India, and it is now my home. Although I am a Bangladeshi national, the country has is in fact became my second home. I visit here just for couple of days.
Any words of advice for Bangladeshi models?
Asif: Bangladeshi people are some of the most beautiful people on earth. To take modeling as a career, what is needed most is proper grooming. Poise and fitness too are important. Along with that, they should educate themselves properly so that they can learn the gravity of being a model on an international scale.
What brings you to Bangladesh this time?
Asif: One of the main reasons I am (was) in Bangladesh is to represent a new brand by Epyllion Group. This is a new fashion and lifestyle brand that has recently been launched to bring the latest fashion trends, casual and high quality outfits to people. The outfits range from western, ethnic to fusion wear. The theme of the brand is “Sailing through life” and is intended to inspire people to be ready for any challenge. The export quality fabrics and trend-setting cuts of the outfits are likely to win the hearts of fashionistas.
