8 sued for killing Tangail Sramik Dal leader
Eight people have been sued on charge of killing Golam Azam, organising secretary of Tangail district unit of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal.
Azam's wife Shilpi Akhter filed the case with Tangail Model Police Station at around 10:30pm on Tuesday.
The accused are Sohel, Russel, Rubel of Kodalia area, and Jahid, Shirsho, Jony, Rubel and Shipon of Kodalia and Sabalia area of the town.
The case was shifted to the detective branch of Police (DB) yesterday afternoon, said Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Mahfeez Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Tangail DB, said law enforcers have already launched a drive to arrest the accused.
Protesting the killing of Azam, the district unit of Sramik Dal enforced a half day hartal in the town yesterday.
Shops and markets in the municipality area remained closed while vehicles were off the roads during hartal hours.
Leaders and activists of Sramik Dal brought out a procession from the district BNP office in the morning. They later held a rally in old bus stand area. Speakers at the rally strongly condemned the killing of Azam and demanded immediate arrest of the killers.
The slain Sramik dal leader was buried at a graveyard in the town yesterday.
A gang shot dead Sramik Dal leader Golam azam in Garinda area under Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon.
Quoting witnesses, Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station, said the incident occurred at around 3:30pm when a group of five youth riding on three motorcycles shot and stabbed him with sharp weapon while Azam was sitting at his furniture shop, leaving him critically injured.
He was admitted to Tangail General Hospital. Doctors of the hospital referred Azam to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). But he succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital at around 4:00pm.
