3 die as railing falls on vehicles
At least three people were killed and two others severely injured when a portion of an under-construction concrete roof railing of a seven-storey garment factory building collapsed on two passing CNG-run auto-rickshaws in Fatullah of Narayanganj city last night.
One of the deceased was identified as Azharul Islam, 35, an auto-rickshaw driver. Names and details of two others, aged between 30 and 40, could not be known immediately.
Following the incident, agitating locals attacked and vandalised the factory, Cadtex Garments Ltd, in Katherpul area. Police later dispersed the crowd.
Aktar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Police Station, confirmed the deaths of the three, and said the incident occurred around 8:30pm when a storm was sweeping over the area.
He said although the collapse occurred during the nor'easter, the owners did not comply with the construction code and put no safety measures for the railing repair work.
Locals said Azharul died on the spot, and they rescued four injured people, including a woman, and sent them to nearby Khanpur hospital where the two others died.
