No polls under 'fake' voter list
The main opposition Awami League (AL) yesterday decided to resist any election in the country without implementation of its reform proposals and cancellation of what it termed the 'fake voter list'.
An AL Presidium meeting with party President Sheikh Hasina in the chair also resolved to step-up anti-government movement from grassroots to the capital on its owns as well as combined with its allies in the 14-party coalition.
"We will take opinions of the leaders of every district and thana in our extended meeting and direct them to intensify movement in their areas," AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil told the press after the meeting.
The presidium deferred the extended meeting from May 24-25 to May 27-28 to be held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium. Members of AL working committee and national committee, and the presidents and general secretaries of district and thana units will participate in it.
Yesterday's meeting also decided to stage a showdown on June 5. The meeting censured the 4-party alliance government for the ongoing power, water, gas, and fuel crises, and the price hike of essentials, noting there is no alternative but to ousting the alliance government to save the country.
It also decided that AL central leaders would visit every thana on May 23 to 24 and hold public rallies and workers meetings there to hype up the anti-government movement. AL leaders will also visit the northern districts under the banner of 14-party opposition line-up on May 20 to 24 to mobilise people.
"The Election Commission loyal to the government has prepared a fake and funny voter list, which does not go with the population, just to bring the 4-party coalition again to power through a massive conspiracy," Jalil said.
Jalil, also coordinator of the 14-party opposition alliance, said no election would be acceptable in the country until their reform proposals were implemented.
