2 robbers killed in fight with coast guards

Two alleged robbers were killed and 50 people including two Coast Guard lieutenants were injured in a series of armed clashes between forest robbers and their aides with coastguards and forest guards at Chairman Bazar in Ramgati under Laxmipur district on Sunday afternoon.

Seventeen coastguards led by Lt Abdus Shahid and seven forest guards led by Aminul Islam Khan, ranger of Daulat Khan forest division under Bhola district conducted a joint-operation to nab forest dacoits led by Abdur Rahman belonging to Alauddin Bahini on Sunday noon, officials said.

When the team reached the remote Chairman Bazar in Teliar Char along the border of Bhola and Laxmipur districts, Abdur Rahman and his men suddenly attacked them from different sides.

As coastguards and forest guards returned fire, Shahabuddin, 55, and Ayub Ali, 35, died on the spot.

At least 50 people from both sides including Lt Abdus Shaid, Lt Nazmul and seven other coastguards and six forest guards were also injured during the three hour-long armed clashes.

Besides, four coastguards were abducted and three rifles of the Coast Guard were snatched away by the armed dacoits.

After the news reached the police supers of Bhola and Laxmipur, additional police force from Ramgati Police Station under Laxmipur district and nearby Char Gajaria police camp of Tazumuddin Police Station under Bhola district rushed to the spot to rescue the coastguards and foresters.

But meantime, the dacoits and a large number of their local associates attacked Char Gajaria police camp.

After an hour the law enforcers were able to bring the situation under control and rescued the abducted four and other hostages.

They took two dead bodies, seven bullet-hit people and Lt Nazmul with injuries on the head to Ramgati Police Station.

Three looted rifles of the Coast Guard were also recovered.

Bullet-hit Md Faruk, Jasim, Sattar, Gafur and Zakir were admitted to a local hospital under police custody.

Lt Abdus Shahid of Coast Guard filed a case with Ramgati Police Station yesterday.

Meanwhile, local people brought out processions at Teliar Char protesting the 'excesses' of law enforcers and demanding punishment of them.

A very tense situation is prevailing along the border areas of the two districts, sources said.
