10 injured as BCL, JCD clash at BRUR
At least ten people were injured as Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men clashed with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) yesterday.
Police and witnesses said BCL activists brought out a procession on the campus at around 11:45am, welcoming the admission seekers during first year honours admission test at the university.
When a procession of JCD activists entered the campus to welcome the admission seekers, BCL men led by BRUR unit chief Mehedy Hasan Shishir chased the JCD activists.
At one stage, the activists of the two rival student bodies equipped with lethal weapons swooped on each other, leaving at least ten people from both sides injured.
Of the injured, Md Imran, Saiful Islam Limon, Md Sharif Hossain, Md Moksed Ali, Shovon, and Rezwan were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital and private clinics in the town while the rest given first aid.
On information, police rushed to the campus and brought the situation under control. Hajrat Ali Belal, convener of JCD university unit, claimed that seven JCD activists were injured in BCL attack on their procession on the campus.
Refuting the allegation, BCL university unit president Mehedy Hasan Shishir said JCD men with help of outsiders attacked their peaceful procession.
Contacted, Abdul Qader Jilani, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Kotwali Police Station, additional police have been deployed on the campus to avert any further untoward situation.
