Bangladesh-India likely to hold meeting of Joint Rivers Commission this year: foreign secretary
The meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) between Bangladesh and India may be held within this year, said Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen.
Before that, a meeting will be held at the water secretary-level between the two countries, he said.
"The JRC meeting is not being held for many years. We will try to hold it this year," he told journalists after newly-appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Vikram Doraiswami, called on him at the foreign ministry yesterday.
Asked about the Teesta water sharing deal, Momen said not only the Teesta, Bangladesh and India have many common rivers and the two countries are also working on those.
"We cannot sit idle on other rivers for the fact that Teesta deal has not been signed," he said.
"We will advance on the areas where we are working. We will work for a sustainable solution on the Teesta river," Momen said.
Besides, the air bubble agreement with India may also be signed by this month to start flight operations that were suspended in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh will finalise the agreement at the soonest, he said.
Bangladesh had some requests, including travel of two attendants with a patient to India. India agreed to that, he also said.
