Students of Dhaka College and Dhaka City College engaged in intermittent clashes today, prompting police to charge with batons and fire tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

At least 10 people who were injured in the clashes received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Masud Alam, deputy commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Ramna division, explained that the clash originated from an incident that took place yesterday. A Dhaka College student was seen at the Science Lab foot over-bridge, where several individuals in plain clothes were present, as captured in CCTV footage. The individuals chased the student, who eventually fell down at the bridge's stairs and was severely injured.

According to the DC, the student was also beaten with a belt.

In response, around 200 to 250 students of Dhaka College gathered today in front of Dhaka City College and began to vandalise the surrounding area, said the DC.

"As soon as we were informed, we rushed to the spot with our force," Masud Alam added.

Masud said that when police had managed to send the Dhaka College students back to their campus, students from City College came out and took to the streets.

"While we were trying to bring the situation under control and disperse the students from the Science Lab intersection, some of them started throwing bricks at us," he said. "The attack on the police intensified."

"At one stage, we had to use two rounds of tear shells to disperse the students," Masud said.
