Amazon and Google register for VAT with NBR

Although they're not opening shop in Bangladesh, this will simplify getting VAT from these giants, say industry experts

To ensure VAT compliance in the Bangladeshi market, Amazon and Google have acquired Business Identification Number (BIN) from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) last week. PwC Bangladesh, the consultant appointed by both ventures, did the paperwork processing.

The move, however, has been misconstrued by netizens as Google and Amazon setting up shop and respective services in the country. Industry experts have opined that these are a mere attempt from these tech giants as a move to ensure business continuity through VAT compliance.

Previously, Httpool, a local advertising agency, made similar registration on behalf of Facebook for VAT compliance though the social media giant did not register itself in Bangladesh. Netflix, the streaming giant, has also been corresponding with NBR in recent times for similar registration, according to reports filed by some media.
