xAI’s CFO resigns after just three months

Mike Liberatore, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI, has left the company after only a few months in the role. The Wall Street Journal reported his departure on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the situation.
Liberatore had been appointed as CFO in April and was involved in a significant $5 billion debt raise for the company in June. He left around the end of July, though the reasons for his exit remain unclear, states a report by Reuters on the matter.
This change in leadership comes during a period of intense competition within the AI industry, where companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are investing heavily in new systems. Liberatore is not the only recent senior departure from the company; xAI's legal head, Robert Keele, and co-founder Igor Babuschkin also left in August, adds the report.
xAI was launched by Elon Musk in 2023 with the aim of providing an alternative to existing AI companies, which he has criticised for their approach to safety and content moderation. The company is currently developing its Grok chatbot platform and expanding its data infrastructure.
